PaxAmericana's Logboek, 11 okt 09

So today marks the one week point of my new diet where I do what I've never done before - count calories! I've lost a total of 4 lbs this week. Not the best results, but not terrible.

This week I'm starting my 6 week challenge of doing 500 minutes of cardio a week. If nothing else will get me amazing results doing an hour & half of cardio a day for 4 days + and hour for 2 days + 30 minutes for one day x 6 weeks should do amazing things. Let's do a little calculation:

On average doing exercise walking (~3.5 mph) I burn 440 calories/hour. 500 minutes is 8.33 hours so


[(400 Calories/hour)/(60 minutes/hour)]*(500 minutes/week) = 3,667 Calories per week


WOW! 3,667 Calories per week = a pound of fat per week. If I'm already restricting my calorie intake by 500 to 1000 calories per day, adding in this exercise is going to create a major positive in my calorie balance (by creating a major negative in my number of calories). Based on exercise alone over the 6 week challenge I can expect to burn 3,667 * 6 = 22,000 Calories. Which with 1 lb of fat =~ 3,500 Calories, we have 6.3 lbs of fat (a little more than 1 pound a week for 6 weeks).

When we factor in the fact that I create at least a 500 Cal deficit each day in what I eat (for the most part... I've had an off day here and there), I should expect to be a total of (6 lbs lost from calorie restriction + 6 lbs lost from exercise =) 12 pounds lighter in 6 weeks! We'll see what happens! :)

Wow, four pounds in one week is awesome. You are doing great. Just remember about the calories in/calories burned thing is that it doesn't take in to account the other things that effect our loss's. Hormones, too much sodium in food, adding new or changing our exercise plan, medications, stress, etc can all effect our weight from day to day. Just keep going no matter what the scale says. You are doing fine.

Great advice! I always forget to think that what the scale says could be wrong because I'm retaining water (too much sodium)... And I'm a senior biochem major in college so STRESS is a daily part of my life! :( Thanks! :)
