So a few weeks ago I saw a gastroenterologist to help with my inconsistent and bothersome bloating. I ended up having the longest doctor appointment of my life as I received what was essentially a lecture on how Americans eat too much sodium, too much salt, and too much food in general. I had heard and researched these topics as well and agreed with the sentiments overall, but I thought that I was doing decently well compared to most folks already, yet I'm still having issues. I took a look at my sugar intake anyway and found I had been averaging about 60 grams per day at the time. That did include vacation food so... maybe not totally accurate but still. I've since reduced sugar to 30g day or less, and I gotta admit, it's actually helped. I am not as bloated as frequently nor as uncomfortably. I've also lost like 5 lbs - not sure if the loss is cause of the sugar or my continued weight training. I have had less success managing sodium, but I am trying. I think sodium makes me puffy. Any who, in the end I've learned that even if you're hitting nutrient targets that are generally good, they might not be good enough for you.
